Check with your code enforcement office. They should know,

My suggestion is to read the code yourself. (Here is a link for your town's ordinances if they don't have their own on-line library: http://www.ecode360.com/BR0201). The reason I say this is that many of our local town officials are starting to make up their own rules in the wake of the backyard chicken keeping controversy. (I live in Howell right near you. The folks in my town are completely mis-applying the definition of "livestock" to chickens (which are not "grazing" animals), as well as completely forgetting about the NJ Right to Farm Act.

Many towns have nothing on their books which either permits or prohibits keeping of chickens and I venture to guess that there are no maximum number of chickens proscribed in ordinances of the towns that specifically permit them.

I know Pt. Pleasant Boro has no prohibition (I sold some chicks to a family there this year and looked myself to make sure).

Let me know what you find out! I'm always curious to see how this is being handled locally!

I found this. Chickens are class IV. No mention of roosters!

§ 98-34. Class IV animals.
[Added 5-8-2001 by Ord. No. 321-B-01]
No more than four animals of Class IV shall be kept or maintained on any property unless they are contained in a covered enclosure within all zoning setback lines applicable for accessory uses with the size of the enclosure being adequate for the number of animals contained as may be approved by the Township Animal Control Officer.

Seems there is no limit as long as they are in a confined covered enclosure that meets setback/ size adequate rules

Wow! Brick was ahead of its time in 2001 when they enacted that ordinance! I'm surprised that they have sub-categorized chickens (Howell doesn't have near as comprehensive an ordinance on point).

If you're still choosing your breed, you may want to get a quieter breed maybe to avoid noise ordinance issues with a rooster (like a nuisance violation for excessive barking dog, etc). My Ameraucana Roos could never live in a suburban setting. They crow at the barn lights at night and all day long. The Brahma Roo I have has a much less obtrusive crow. More like someone clearing their throat. Lol. The hens aren't as vocal as some of the other breeds too.

If your 'in it' for the eggs, you won't need a rooster, but if you want fertile eggs you are definitely going to need a daddy! Good luck to you and beware of 'chicken math'

Does anyone know the chicken rules for Robbinsville Nj ? Went out for pepper plants and came home with chickens. I raised chickens before as a kid and bred Parrots as a adult. But do not know the laws in Ribbinsvile.
