Chicks not picked up at Post Office

Today I went to the post office where they had a crate of chicks waiting to be picked up. They had been trying to reach the person for hours. I told them if nobody came to give me a call. I came back 5 minutes before close and the post master told me they were not allowed to give them to anyone. They told me that they would most likely die over night. It had happened before. I was told they have to be given to the person who ordered even if they are dead in the box. This broke my heart. Those babies had no food or water and there weren't as many cheeps at that time. There has to be laws about this sort of thing. How can they just leave them to die? What can be done?

As the postmaster said, it's happened before. It's extremely sad and unfortunate these people order chicks but don't make plans to pick them up on the day they were told they'd be there. They most certainly knew. The sender will also know they weren't picked up, so that person isn't getting money back most likely.

I wish it could be criminal to order and abandon chicks, but unfortunately, it's not. I guess I'd talk to your local law enforcement about it to see what they say, but chances are, they won't do a thing.

It will take people like you to come up with a solution. It's been an issue since shipping became a problem over the last 4 years, not to mention some offices are better than others at this.

First you'd need legistation, then enough volunteers to step in quickly, but even this is a gamble because this is beyond the responsibilities of any postal worker to ensure birds are cared for.

The alternative is for people to just stop ordering from places that ship, and opt for a farm transporation service that will pick up the birds, check on them and deliver them to you which do exist.

It’s so cruel and such a horrible way to die 😣

@Clementine2022 Well, you can’t take possession of the chicks, but you could be at the post office first thing in the morning with chick crumble and water. What’s the harm in offering some “support” for them until they’re picked up? Maybe the post office would let you, maybe not. It’s worth a try. I hope they survive the night. So sad. 😞

They can't open the crate they say. But I will try

Obviously, postal rules don’t allow for compassion. But when someone doesn’t pick up any live animal right away for whatever reason, there really should be a few rules in place that allow for temporary care until they’re picked up. Or if they’re abandoned, why not a plan in place to turn them over to someone else for care? Well, I hope that this story does have a good ending. You’re wonderful for caring more for that crate of chicks than the person who ordered them.
