Hi Chickenlovers! My poor RIR is sick, took her to the chicken vet, 2 types of antibiotic later (after brief respite) she is sick again. Vet said liver infection, usual sick chicken symptoms with bright yellow poop, sometimes with little baked bean looking things (failed eggs? she's not laying). She is an amazing bird and is being very brave, but she needs help! Coop large clean and sanitized, poop cleaned daily. Harriet thanks you for your help

Welcome to BYC. It sounds like she may have egg yolk peritonitis or internal laying. With those it is common to get E.coli, and they can cause bright yellow poop, or all varieties of strange poops. I'm not an expert on it though, but not much else can be done for hens with EYP other than antibiotics, and keeping them comfortable. If they develop ascites or water belly from the disease or liver/heart failure, the lower abdomen may look very swollen and tight. You can remove some of the fluid with an 18 gauge needle inserted under the skin. Here is a case of a hen with it: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...gn-for-an-internal-layer-egg-yolk-peritonitis

Sounds like the infection has taken over and the antibiotics didnt help much. It might be best to have her put down. Whatever bacterial infection it is, it could be easily spread in feces and if you have other chickens, you dont want them picking up the infection. I wish you the best.

Thank you. We are definitely pondering having her put down. Hate to do it, but she's hurting.
