bringing goats too petsmart?

My sister decided to take my dog to petsmart when he was a puppy learning to mark. He's part German shepard so he could smell every little trace of pee. He peed every five feet. Needless to say, he didn't stay in for more than a minute. We sat in the car while she went shopping.

Well see that makes no sense... the SELL snakes... people seeing yours could help them sell theirs... just as people seeing dogs can trigger them to get their own... how odd.

Thanks All that answered my question very well!

I think this reaction might have stemmed from the manager's personal dislike of snakes, or something along those lines. People can be very weird about them and the snake phobia is a potent one. For this reason I would be wary ever bringing a snake into public view. Two friends of ours come to the house regularly but wouldn't be able to set foot in the door if we ever told them about our gorgeous fellow in the next room.

What people don't know about such things, won't hurt them. I had a red baby corn snake. He would wrap around my wrist like a bracelet and I "wore" him to home depot over the summer. Nobody noticed he was alive.

my ball python has something about pony tails if you have a pony in your hair and you are holdinh her you wont have it for long, My dd was about 3 and she was holding the snake, (I was right there) My DH took a pic and my mom said ooo what a cute idea to wrap her scarf around her pony tail like that... I said ..mom... its the snake... she lost it and I got the 3rd degree about how the snake is bigger then she is..

LMAO

See I can't take the boa anywhere, he's constantly on the move (tree snakes...). But he DOES love to burrow in hair.

We had a baby cornsnake for a while (who sadly choked on his pinky mouse one evening) who was the sweetest, calmest little guy, perfect bracelet-snake material, lol.

People sometimes.

Rommie the dog thinks Petsmart (Petco is too expensive) is Doggy Disneyland. She starts whining in anticipation when we drive onto the road leading to it. She's not interested in shopping but she sure loves to go there.

People pet her and admire her (she assumes everyone thinks she's adorable). Associates give her treats. She has, at best, a tentative grasp on self control so she rarely has more than a foot or a foot-and-a-half worth of leash because of this. And gets stern warnings when she begins to get too excited about something. I only take her when my DH can handle the shopping cart and food and litter bags, so that she has my nearly full attention at all times.

She's not great with other dogs, but I don't tolerate misbehavior so it gets nipped in the bud. I can imagine how she'd react (or start to react) to a goat, but she wouldn't be allowed to do more than start to react.

I have, however, had to learn how to warn off people who Just Cannot Understand that I do not want them to drag their dog (or allow their dog to drag Them) over to "make friends" my dog does not want to make friends with your dog. Nor do I want her to.

The only real "problem" we have is that many young male associates (and young males in general) have encouraged her to jump up on them (because she's "so fun")

It's hard to correct behavior that she only does to other people (she knows better than to jump up on mom or dad). Since she knows she's going to be corrected for jumping on people, she does a lightning quick jump and then sits for treats

I learned a long time ago, though, that living with her and her zest for life and sense of humor was going to mean I was going to be embarrassed on occasion.

we have a little pygmy wether that we take everywhere. and believe it or not, he is house broke . no im not kidding (no pun intended) he thinks hes a dog... Curly has been to Petsmart, Petco, our local farm and ranch stores.. nursing homes, schools. hes our farm mascot and we love him..

but we have also taken our ferrets, our rats, mini horses and a few chickens into petsmart too. never once had a problem cept the one time when a mastiff licked curlys face lol!

Here's my worst encounter at Petsmart.

Had a client whom I'd been working with for about four months. Her dog was a young GSD with some fear issues and some mild/moderate dog aggression. Much improvement in my clients handling skills and bond with her dog so we decide to start doing some Petsmart training sessions.

Picked nights an hour before close hoping to minimize the first few interactions with other dogs in this environment. A Petsmart trainer got out of her class about ten mins after we arrived. My client was doing a long down stay with her dog, I was standing by coaching and watching. Petsmart trainer approaches asks what we are working on, we do some "shop talk" she seems to understand my clients issues and I am actually impressed that she is understanding. (that was a mistake as you will find out)

She leaves and comes back with two dogs on leash, approaches me (not client) and asks if we'd like some distractions. I jump at the chance to have such a controlled situation. Say yes and proceed to coach client thru a Sit-to-greet after explaining to Petsmart trainer what I would like her to do with her dogs.

Instead....Petsmart trainer approaches client, client has her dog sit, then Petsmart trainer proceeds to tell her dog to say hello while dropping the leash. Her dog postures immediately, clients dog maintains his control but barely. Client does a PERFECT about face and distracts her dog while I step on the leash of the lose dog and hand it over to the other "trainer". I tell her Im done with her help and told her it could have been much worse.

I'll never trust another supposed trainer again in any store like that without knowing for sure that this person is really what I consider a dog trainer.

I took the manager aside after my client left and told him what had happened. He wasn't pleased and I next time I saw that trainer she was assisting not teaching.

Yeah I had a Petco trainer *grab my dog's leash* away from me after I corrected her for posturing at another dog.

I was not even in the class! They were using shoppers dogs to "proof"!!

I was so shocked I didn't rip him a new one but I should have, and I should have talked to the manager. I have not been back to that particular store.
