I’m set to pick up a 17 month old Roo in the next week or two. I have a plan to integrate him with my 15 pullets over the course of weeks, but don’t have a great plan to get him here.

Should I just bring a dog crate with me? Cover it with a blanket or sheet? Should I put a bar in it so he can roost? Food? Water? Treats to sweeten him up? It’s not a far drive, just an hour and a half but I want to make it as easy and stress-free as possible.

A dog crate with some shavings on the bottom is fine. You can add water if you want but it's not necessary.

Totally agree about the dog kennel and shavings. But I'd chunk up some watermelon or cucumber and put it in a dish instead of water. It will keep him hydrated. It won't slosh around. And if pieces get knocked out of the dish they'll be easy enough to collect before you rinse the kennel out again.

Ear plugs might not be a bad idea. He may not care for the ride. But he'll be OK.

PS Joking about the earplugs. You need to be able to hear traffic and any potential sirens.

Great idea about the watermelon! I think I’ll do that. I didn’t even consider he would be squawking the whole way home! It should be an interesting ride
