Hello,
Just wondering if anyone has any expert tips on the above.
I have previously been using a Janoel 24 on 2 separate hatches last year with success, and although there are mixed reviews on these have got on with it well.
Due to different lockdown/hatch times Inhave used it the Janoel for incubating and the newly acquired Brinsea for the lockdown/hatch base.
I had setup the Brinsea (and ran it for almost a week prior, while eggs were still incubating in the Janoel) and used exactly as the instructions specified for the Brinsea but this time had a TERRIBLE hatch rate with 1 dying between days 18-21 (small with unabsorbed albumen & sack and its movement had stopped by day 21) and 2 further chicks died fully formed in their shell (they seemed on the larger side and were malpositioned so I'm wondering whether they were too big to fully rotate, couldnt breakout and possibly suffcated. No pips and werent close enough to aircell etc) I did an egg-topsy on day 25 when I knew they were long gone
Absolutely devastated, Im aware this is part of the process but was such a shock to see it go so wrong so quickly and I get sooo attached to the little guys.
I had the humidity high enough etc and followed the instructions to a T so don't understand how 3 out of 4 could die like that
Does anyone have any tips?
Is there anyway to avoid malpositioned eggs?
Are chicks more prone to this or are ducklings just as much at risk?.
Anyway....
So I am now 3 days away from lockdown for my first ever duck egg (only 1, but with 10 to follow a week later) and obviously very nervous and worried about this.
I havent had trial runs of this Brinsea bator (as I know it takes time to get to know your machine) so if anyone has experience with this model then please pass on any tips/corrections to their instructions.
Also any top tips for best hatching (mallard) duck eggs would be GREATLY appreciated as everyone seems to say such different things in everything I've read on here so far!!
- Ideal Humidity
- Hand turning vs auto.
- Positioning of eggs up to and after lockdown etc
- Ideal duckegg incubating temp and do you reduce this on LD / hatch day?
Thank you in advance and sorry for the long read!
Very anxious,
Alice
Ps for Positioning eggs with pointy end down, how would an auto turner turn these? My Janoel doesnt seem like it would work (auto turner) if they were tip down so have always laid sideways with no previous problems until now! (Obviously turner is stopped at LD)
I know some say it is more natural for them to be on their sides (and I usually do this also) but am wondering if pointy end down reduces malpositioning!?
