Brinsea Octo 20 Eco temp question?

I had a temp spike in my eco but it was because I accidentally left the vent wide open. I added water to get the humidity up & got too high. I was too worried about the humidity & added too much water. I read you could adjust humidity back down by leaving the vent door open a while. It went back down but the brinsea adjusted the temp for the temp loss it thought had happened. Now I'm just very careful adding water. It made me sick to lose silkies because of my stupidity. I wanted them babies sooooo much.

Geesh. I thought mine was bad, being only a degree or two off.

I guess it's just like bantyshanty's incubator that spiked - sometimes, even with some of the best products, you get one that malfunctions.

When I first got the incubator last April the glass thermometer was only a couple of degrees higher than the digital (no spot check last year, great hatches).

This year when I fired it up the two were off by considerably more, so I ordered the spot check.

I'm glad that I had a second thermometer plus the spot check otherwise I would have never gotten anything to develop!!

I agree with oldtimegator. Definitely go by the results you get and leave that as the temp. you shoot for on the thermometer. The most common thing that I have seen cause a big spike in temperature is removing a lot of eggs all at one time. Did any of you do that? The other thing is adding too hot of water.

ooohh... yes, I actually did. Out of 26 eggs, I had 6 that were not developing at all, like they were infertile. I removed them all at once before the temp spiked that night! Thanks for the comment. At least I know now:barnie

When I've done the same thing in a Hovabator Genesis, however, nothing like that happened. Back to the old 'bator for me I guess....
