Hello fellow Vancouverite. I just joined this site yesterday. I also garden; we've worked on a boulevard garden for the past 20 years and enjoy the connection with the neighbours. I've always wanted chickens and this is the year! This site has introduced me to the type of coop/run that I want, bedding, litter, health etc ... so much information. Every so often the info is over whelming and a little scary, so I have had moments that I wanted to chicken out, but ultimately, super excited to start the coop build next month and install the teen chickens early June. Would love to trade notes. In the meantime, welcome!
Very cool! I just picked up my chicks - my current set up is a brooder heatplate type from amazon, big cardboard box with wood shavings, a cardboard home made feeder, and water with some apple cider vinegar. i got my chicks from junecreekfarm in langley - it was a good experience overall

also, where are you getting your starter feed? I got mine at otter co-op feed in langley, but i want to find somewhere closer
and regarding potential health issues - did you find a place to purchase medication for in case the chicks get coccidiosis?

I would have loved to have started with chicks but loved the idea of having June Creek hold them until we were a little older and we had a confirm on the sex. This week is coop build week. We'll have a 5x4 coop and 5X12 run underneath. I've been following the ChickenChick.com religiously and will be incorporating most of her ideas to make life for the chickens lovely and life for me easy! I should be getting the littles by the beginning of May as soon as the coop/run are finished and I've loaded sand into the run. They'll be 8 weeks by then and I can't wait. What breeds did you end up getting?
