Broad-Winged Hawk- A threat???

I've been looking up hawks in my state and found that so far, the Broad-Shouldered Hawk sounds the most similar to what I hear. So it's possible that the Broad-Shouldered Hawk is what is hanging around here...Now off to do some more research on it!

Anyone have any info about them?

It looks like a bird of prey; looks like a hawk, and I've seen it circling around in the air (searching for prey on the ground?) I've always believed it was a Kestrel, but now that I see real images of them and how small they really are, I'm not sure what it is.



Here's what a Broad-Winged Hawk looks like:

It hunts here only in Summer (which is the only time I see it, like right now), it hunts mainly from trees/canopies (I often see it hopping in the tree branches around here), the adult's size are about 34 to 45 cm (13 to 18 in.), and the call is very similar.

Seems like it's the size of the red-shouldered hawks that are so common here. A threat? Yes and no...a red-shouldered dived bombed my chicks when they were 6 weeks. Luckily it got none. It always kept an eye on them in a tall pine tree until today. They are 11 weeks old now and the same hawk pays no attention, he'll fly by without glancing but the chickens are warry. I wouldn't dismiss the threat though, a starving hawk or one feeding young might attempt to attack a full grown chicken.

Red tails make a Kleeee sound. Are you near the coast, could be an osprey. They do not eat chickens
