broken breast bone by dog Roo didn't make it.

One of our Cochin Roos got inside the dogs pen. Innitially I thought the dog had killed the chicken, but when I got him out he was breathing. DH came home and took the Roo to his work. He works at an exotic animal ranch, and there were many people there who could help, and the meds and dressings needed to help the Roo.
When I realized he was still alive, I wrapped him in a towel and laid him flat, he stopped shaking as soon as i got the towell around him and laid back down. He was taking deep breaths and eventually laid his head down and closed his eyes while I sat and talked to him. I did have to leave him for a second and when I came back he tried to get up. On the drive to the ranch DH said Roo kept his head up and looked around, his breathing was deep and steady. There his wounds were cleaned and treated and the vet looked him over.
Injuries include:
*Most of his feathers are gone, and on his neck and back he looks as though he was skinned.
*a small part of his neck is showing inner tissue, but it is not broken and he will move his head.
*Legs and wings at this point do not seem to be broken.
*He has a small puncture wound near his breast.
*His breast bone IS broken.

At this point he is not moving around but that is understandable, his breathing is still steady, from what DH says he falls asleep, but when he goes near him and taps the box he will open his eyes. No one there thinks he will survive. DH is skeptical, I am not there. I am just wondering if anyone has faced a broken breast bone. Do you think he will survive, or do you think he is in so much pain we should put him down. I wish I didn't have to ask, but I can not make the decision. I do not want him to suffer, but he is fighting so I don't want to rush off and end him if he has a chance.

That is a difficult decision. I'm sorry this happened. I dont know what I would do if any of mine were attacked. I would probably be in your shoes asking for help!!! Personally I would probably give him over night and see if there are any improvements in the am. If they are giving him meds he shouldnt be in pain. If there are no improvments or seems worse then end his suffering.. Good luck!!

I haven't faced a broken breast bone either, but I want to give you and your roo some support! What a blessing it is your hubby has access to such great care. Has the rooster had anything for pain?

Thanks for the info, I didn't know I could edit my thread but now that I am typing this I see the button that says edit thread. Yes it is good that DH has access to great people. B.B. was doing good, but around 1pm DH said he laid his head down and went to sleep, when he checked on him again he had passed. I know everyone here loves their chickens, and every one of us have our favorites. B.B. was one of ours, he was as sweet as he can be. He followed me around the yard, would take a few pats on the head, when we lost a hen who had 4 little chicks we put them in a small coop and B.B. would hang out next to them most of the day and come running any time you went near their coop. We had another hen who had started laying and he took it upon himself to sit on her eggs. A real sweet heart. I know this morning he was heading for us, since we were all outside taking pictures for the first day of school. Unfortunatly he misjudged where he was going and jumped down into the dog pen. Now my yard buddy is gone, and I am facing the reality that the dog may need a new home. We are all really sad. I just don't understand why the favorite chicken is always the one to go.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that he didn't make it, but you certainly gave him the best chances if it was possible to recover. It IS always our favorites, isn't it? Much love to you and your flock.

Oh I am sorry. You are right though its always the very fav. I am so attached to mine and get so worried if one comes down sick. And its tough to have to face getting rid of your dog..
