I think my cat broke his tail!
it was shut hard in a door, he ran off, puffed up, and started to hiss and jump back a few times like a little buck. then he ran and hide under some bushes. he tryed to swat at us when we tryed to touch it.

(somthing he never does.)

Has anyone ever had a cat with a broken tail

what do you think I should do??????

I'd bring him to the vet, isn't that what you do with all your pets?

That's a hard one........ hummm. Try to pin down a very very ticked off cat and check his tail, if kinked, give it a good yank to straighten it all the while praying the person holding the cat doesn't get bitten, scarred for life or let go of said cat.......

or do you let the cat calm down, put some medicine in his water and let him live with a kink.............. It's danged either way.

Poor kitty, hopefully it's just sore...

I thought that if you pull a cat by the tail, since the vertebrae extend further into the tail you can actually paralyze the animal? Maybe I'm mistaken but in college that's what we were told...

I called the vet right after it happened.
they said if it really is broken, it becomes dead, and the cats try to chew off there tail

has anyone every had a cat with Broken tails????????

I did have a young cat a few years ago whose tail tip was closed in the door. It was only the first 2-3 inches of the tail. Barely caught in the door. The damaged part did die and fall off. I found it on the living room floor. I would watch for infection, and pain. Edited to add: if infection or pain is noticeable I would take the cat to the vet!

My cat got a broken tail as a result of being hit by a car as a youngster. A broken leg, too (on a dead-end gravel road in front of my house, no less). Her leg was casted, but her tail was left alone. She's now 14 yrs old, and has a small kink at the end of her tail. I think you would only need to be concerned if the break is near the base of the tail, very close to the spine. I don't think the tail would "fall off" unless it had nearly been severed.

We had a cat get his tail caught in the car door and it was definitely broken, but it never fell off and at that time we didn't do anyting with it (this was about 20 years ago) and he was fine....albeit sore and cranky but eventually the tail healed on its own. Never heard of them falling off

NO! Aspirin can be fatal to cats!

I had a cat many years ago with a crook at the tip of his tail from where a horse stepped on it. It didn't fall off. Nothing ever happened to it except that it looked like a hook instead of a tail. He certainly didn't seem to notice anything was wrong.

I'm surprised your vet didn't say to bring it in?

We have a cat that we rescued from another barn. A horse stepped on his foot and we took him in, isolated him and had him treated by a vet. I'd do the same if it was his tail.
