Hi All
I am new to the group and in need of advice. One of my hens has a broken egg inside her. After investigation I discovered it is actually in her large intestine! The oviduct is clear and healthy looking. But her intestine is a mess of shatter shell and egg membrane that just won't budge. I gave her a 20 minute soak in warm water to help her relax. Then I tried again to get the egg out. She was pretty calm and working with me to try to get it out. We worked for a while but I couldn't get a good hold on it and it was stuck. Then after a big push on her part I rechecked and it had slipped further down to where I couldn't really reach it. I really don't want to make things worse. Is there any chance she will pass it on her own? Has anyone seen this problem before? Thanks for your help.

Oh no, your poor hen. I have not had this experience, but I hope the normal contractions of the intestines will move it toward the vent. You might want to lubricate her vent with some vegetable oil or something, so it won't require as much pushing. I hope it is not stuck in a sort of "pocket" - I read about something like that on this site.

Maybe to get more responses you should repost under the topic of "Emergencies/ diseases"

It did seem like it was kind of stuck in a pocket off to one side. That was why I had a really hard time getting a good enough hold on it to get it out. Then when I was able to get it our of the pocket she made the big push and it slipped further down. I do hope see works it out on her own. She's the friendliest of all our hens and my favorite.

from New Mexico!

I have never had this happen to any of my girls yet. But I know how it is when it is your favorite girl. I she works it all out and gets back to her old self soon.
