Broken egg inside my hen

Hi, my resue hen big red is standing puffed up at the edge of their run. On closer inspection I noticed bits of broken egg inside her. What should I do?

The only treatment for this that I know of is surgery

I would clean up the vent area with some soapy water. Then give her a calcium tablet or Tums orally. Break it in two if necessary but she should just swallow it. I would repeat the calcium daily for up to a week. The calcium will stimulate muscle contraction to help pass any egg shell or another egg that may be coming along.

The shell came out, and I gave her a calcium tablet and she's doing much better now.

I’m glad that she is better after getting the calcium. Giving the calcium once a day for up to 7 days may strengthen her shells so any other eggs won’t get stuck or break inside.

Hey y'all, same thing is happening to my Lav Orp, she's about 2 years old. She laid an egg last night kinda late around dusk. Let the hens out this morning and she was acting really lethargic. Had a lot of poop on her butt and a small soft egg shall fragment sticking out of her vent. I saw a shell less egg/yolk in the coop, too. I have given her one tums tablet and am going to do a warm Epsom salt bath (husband is getting Epsom salts now). I also tried to gently feel inside her vent with a clean gloved finger lubricated with olive oil but did not feel anything. Anything else I can do for her? Called my vet but she's closed and recommended going to emergency vet. But none of the emergency vets she recommended see chickens/birds...

I would separate her for observation with food and water. The Tums should help her muscle contractions. Sometimes there may be another egg or soft egg coming afterward. She can heave another calcium tablet in 24 hours and repeat daily for a total of 7 days. Occasionally hens will have stuck soft eggs, or eggs that break, and they may come more often than one a day. I prefer calcium with vitamin D3 rather than Tums. Keep her vent cleaned off with soap and water when she soils herself.

We had this happen and a week-long treatment with calcium helped her expel the egg contents. Luckily no further issues. I hope your hen is feeling better!!
