I just went out to the hen house to collect todays eggs and found one in the nest broken, not sure if one of my pullets has done it or not. this is the first time I have seen this. they only use one nest, which is a milk crate. I'm sure hoping someone has not become "an egg" eater? Any advice will surely be appreciated. Also, found one egg on the floor of the cage?

Did it look like the egg was eaten? Or just broken and left alone? My hens will sometimes accidentally break one of their eggs because they were sitting in the nest box the wrong way and squashed it. I wouldn't worry about it just yet, but definitely keep an eye out for more broken eggs in the next few days.

As for the one laid on the floor of the coop....at least with my hens, if the more dominant hen decides to lay at the same time as the hen at the bottom of the pecking order, or there are too many hens trying to lay at the same time, one of them ends up having to lay an egg elsewhere (which isn't usually one of the many other perfectly good nestboxes, but on the floor or in the pen

I know what you mean about the "best spot". this is the first time for that too. You know, I'm not really sure, but I think you may be right, one of them probably sat on it the wrong way, it really doesn't look as though one of them ate it?

I will for sure, keep my eyes out for them. I just got two new laying pullets this past sunday from our fair, and so far, one of them has started to lay. chickens can be so funny sometimes, but you sure gotta luv 'em. thanks so much for the advice.
