Checked the coop this afternoon expecting the usual. 2 eggs in the corner...I've tried to break them of that but so far unsuccessful...1 in nesting box 3 and 5 in nesting box 1...but today only 4...and one was broken. It was definately a hard shell egg. It also was not eaten which makes me think they smashed it by accident. The yoke and egg goo was all over the other eggs. Is this normal or should I worry? Oyster shell is always free choice and their shells are usually pretty thick.

I personally wouldn't worry about it unless there's a pattern...and I agree, one broken egg could just be an accident. :)
Ok good. I figured as much because usually if an egg breaks they go cookoo for coco puffs which is why I thought it was strange. I actually tossed what was left of it out of the coop and they started fighting over it

It's good that they wait to be given a broken egg, rather than helping themselves. :) It's always disappointing to find a gooey mess like that all over the other eggs in the nest box, though.
If its a soft shell its usually fair game. But hard shells they usually leave alone until I drop them which has only happened twice lol. Since then I made a basket to carry them in. My pockets just aren't suitable
