The last 2 mornings I have found broken egg in coop, this morning it was directly under roosting bar, I have 2 Buff Orpingtons that recently started to lay,we have 2 nesting boxes so I know that’s adequate and they do go in nest boxes and eggs being laid in nesting boxes, any ideas?

With new layers, it's not uncommon to have broken eggs under the roost. Even older layers who start laying again in the spring get out of the swing of things. By the time their egg is coming down the chute it's too late to get off the roost and go to a nest box. And with new layers they just haven't completely understood the concept that she's supposed to lay her egg in that nest box. It helps if you put fake eggs in the nest box. Having nice fluffy, cozy bedding in there with enough room to stand up when the egg comes out also helps.

My lavender Orpington did this for about 5 days…3 eggs dropped and cracked from the roosting bars. It wasn’t always morning either. She was purposely going to “her spot” on the bar in, the middle of the day, to lay an egg. They were her first eggs. I wondered if that was her “comfort” spot since she sleeps there almost every night. I was in the coop one afternoon when I heard a “pop” and when I looked up, there she was with the broken egg under her. I picked her and the egg up and moved them to the next box. She was not happy to be in there but I started finding her eggs in the nest box soon after.
