Broken eggs

I have been finding a broken egg here and there from my 5 month hens who started laying a couple weeks ago. The two in the picture I found today.
I am having a hard time keeping shavings in the nesting boxes, so I’m not sure if some are getting broken because the hard surface or the chickens are breaking and eating them occasionally.
I ordered some aspen nesting bads I’m going to try out in the next couple days.
Any input would be appreciated!

Try increasing the lip on the nest boxes so that the nesting material does not get kicked out.

Nesting pads like the ones you ordered should help as well. My free version is empty feed sacks with a sheet or two of bubble wrap inside, folded to fit snugly in the bottom of the nest box.
