Seven weeks ago, I introduced five new chicks, 3.5 months old, to my four 10 month old hens. As the older hens wouldn't let them inside the coop, and I was in the process of building a second coop, they would sleep huddled against the 2x3 inch heavy gauge fencing I'd surrounded every inch of the run in. I found out that raccoons were able to reach inside the small opening, pull out their heads and decapitated 4/5. I was devastated. That day I securely attached wire with 1/2 inch openings and two feet high along the base of the coop so that this couldn't happen again. Lesson learned
