I thought sleeping they didn’t need much space but I guess our previous batches were in with laying hens in regular coop with vents. We just wanted to avoid fights because the layers don’t like them

Ah okay. I think the no ventilation is definitely what killed them.
The previous were in the real coop. These survivors will have their own coop asap. With vents roosts and an adequate roof

You should know that they will have a better chance of not dying if they eat proper feed which would be a chick type feed...not a layer type feed.
Thank you for telling me this. All of what I learned mostly came from people at tsc and not all good advice I’m learning. Also, I think I was feeding them too often. They may have been overeating contributing to their death
