Broken hearted

Your "neighbor" is not a very responsible animal owner. In my opinion, it is not a good idea to let your dog get a taste of blood, any kind of blood...and for the dog to come into your yard and do this is just not right...you deserve to have a speaking to with this un-neighborly person...I am sorry for your loss and I hope it does not happen again

I just got 4 baby muscovy's yesterday..this morning i also picked up a couple of just 2 year old female muscovy's...i have to baby ducklings in an old rabbit run cage out by the chicken pen and the two new females in a plastic snow fence pen...he headed into the city to get a small shed to convert into a duck coop....I was so nervous to leave the @ females in the plastic pen while we where gone...one of our neighbors lets his dog run the country side...we came home and the plastic pen was not touched..the baby's in the cage however had not been to lucky...the dog jumped all over the rabbit run till he broke through it and managed to get 3 of my baby's....i only have one alive.....i am so mad and i have already spoken to them about their dog causing issues with our own dogs in our yard...I know it was not my dogs for they where locked up in the house while we were gone and their dog was sneaking out while we were pulling in...the blood was still warm on all three of them...i'm so upset i just want to shoot that dog...ugh!!!! now I have to be the bigger person and very nicely talk to them and state he needs to be tied or else.....thinking the paint ball gun for starters although my heart says 22 is what he deserves....the other neighbor has just lost one of his ducks the day before and assumes its the same dog but cant prove it....why is it people just figure that they have the right to let their dog run the country side...we do have a by-law in my area take states they must keep their dog tied at all times......just ranting people ...sorry
Just call me a big old meanie, but I think I would literally shoot the neighbor's dog. I'm sorry, but irresponsible pet owners really tick me off. This is not only irresponsible, it's rude, disrespectful and downright mean. If you have already talked to the neighbor and obviously, it hasn't done any good at all, I guess you could trap the dog and call your county animal control officer to come get it. We live out in the country and have a few dogs that roam free...we had one dog that was scoping out my chickens at the back of our property... Had tried figuring out who she belonged to, and finally gave up and gave my husband permission to eliminate her if she came back again (she didn't....but showed up the day after I lost 7 chickens at once when we weren't home...she was there for 3 days in a row before she disappeared, so either someone else took her out or her owners decided to pen her up). I hate to be ugly, as I have dogs and know that sometimes they can get out from the best intentioned person, but people that aren't considerate of others don't deserve to have pets. Just my .02.

I am sorry for your loss.

If it were me -
I'd call animal control to inform them and ask for a visit.
I'd call local law enforcement and ask what are my rights. I don't know your situation; it might be legal to discharge a firearm in your yard, or it might not. Get the facts before you do anything. I'd ask the LEO to speak to the neighbor.
I'd buy a game cam and place it where it'll get pictures of anything bothering your birds.
I'd make sure the dog owner knows I'm serious. Not belligerent, but serious. Most rural areas take a very dim view of loose 'pets' bothering livestock.
I'd have a .22 pistol with ratshot or a .410 shotgun handy. (Because my animals are close. Anything over 20 yards or so, I'd have the .22 rifle handy). Don't shoot if you don't want to kill. If you shoot, shoot to kill.

My opinion only.

OP i am sorry to hear that. Definitely, call animal control. There is some saying and i cannot recall it word for word but something like a dog is a pet on your property, off it's a predator. I keep various types of livestock here that could be harmed or killed, so stray dogs ARE no longer pets, they are now a danger that can cost me livestock and large vet bills.

From what I understand in my state, shooting a dog with a BB gun, a paint ball gun, shot gun with rock salt or ANY other way of harming a dog could be considered animal cruelty and it could be a fine and possible jail sentence. Now, that being said, if a dog is destroying your livestock or you are in fear of that dog, and it's on YOUR property, you may kill it with a gun (if you are allowed to discharge firearms in your area). The "trick" is you MUST kill the dog with the FIRST shot, no second shots, that would be animal cruelty because you only wounded the animal with the first shot.

Moral of this story is to make darn sure you KILL the animal. If he goes home wounded, you could be in trouble, no, make that you WILL be in trouble.
