I have a hen who got stepped on by a horse and has a broken leg just above her foot. We splinted it and brought her inside to keep her warm. She is still eating and drinking well so I'm thinking she'll be okay. I just need some reassurance. Her foot is swollen and warm but no where above the break is swollen. And suggestions?

Mine had a broken leg, healed well but she hops around now. The only think I would watch for is an abcess. Birds have "different" kinds of abcesses with hard material in them. They dont drain like mammals do. I had to open the leg with a blade (Im a CVT, I did it at work) and actually dig out all the material. Hmmm...probably to much information! Sorry.

Otherwise, she healed up well from the break though. My girlfriend also had a hen that had her leg possibly broken from a predator--she confined it and it bounced back after 3 weeks or so.

Good health to your hen!

I'm wondering about the swelling in her foot. Is that normal. I'm sure if I broke my leg there would be some swelling but it makes me nervous still. It happened a week ago tomorrow and we got the splint on her Tuesday and brought her in. And she won't stand up to poop. So I've been washing and drying her back end off every night. Any easier suggestions?

i think that the swelling below the break is normal. she will probably be fine. just keep what you're doing.
