Hi everyone looking for some advice my hen broke her leg, she got her toe caught in a crack in a plastic barrel I was using as a dust bath and she panicked, I had her at the vet who applied a stint and prescribed pain meds, I had to hoist her up in a sling as she was lying in her poo and sitting on the broken leg, she is eating and drinking great and appears happy, but now I'm worried if she can lay her eggs while in the sling ??? I got this idea of the sling from a post here, its working very well, hopefully she will heal and walk again, gotta give her a chance, any advice is greatly appreciated.

Wow. You’re a great caretaker for you’re chicken. Hope she will be fine. 🤞
Sorry I cant help. No such experience myself. Just waiting for others to respond. :caf

I've hoisted her down now so she can lay her egg but she is still supported with the sling to stop her from rolling onto her side, this way is working great, also gives her a break form being up in the hoist, thanks so much Anne you just gave me a great idea, I can hoist her back up later so she can eat and drink again herself, I'm checking on her hourly and I give her plenty food by hand also 😊😊 glad I posted

Did your chicken heal well? I came across this post whilst seeing whether anyone had used a barrel for a dust bath, as I was going to pick one up from a local seller tomorrow - wondering whether it's a good idea now.

I use an old big flower pot (pottery). Don’t think that it will ever crack. Downside is : Its hard to replace. I prefer re-use over new plastics, bc that’s better for the environment. But if the barrel is soft plastic and you check the barrel regularly I don’t think it’s ever going to be a problem.
