We noticed today that the golden laced Polish Rooster that we have has his middle toe bent sideways. I caught him and was going to splint it today, but it is hard set in the sideways direction. He doesn't seem to have any trouble walking on it. I feel like I would be breaking it to bend it back to normal position and it has a big knot there. Should I just leave it alone? My chickens are giving me a fit this week.

Is that caused by a birth defect or a new injury? If the toes have been like that for some time, I would leave it alone. One toes are bent for some time, it would be painful to try and train them to another position. Bent toes can only be fixed in the first week of life.

I think it was injured a long time ago one day when our dogs got out. About a year ago, I had to splint his foot because his toes were curled and he couldn't walk. He's been fine since but it may have had a slight bend. Not like this though. I have about a hundred chickens so apparently didn't notice this because he walks and runs just fine. So I can't say exactly how long it's looked this sideways, but not more than 2 or 3 months for sure.
