Hello everyone, I'm trying something that I have not done before and I put up my brooding light and switched to a ceramic heater. Temps perfect, however chic activity is way down, sleep is up as compared to the brooding light, which had them on.a continous 5 minute sleep, eat, drink, play, poop, sleep cycle.

Anyone have any input? Normal?

Did setup old break light led from scooter parts on a wallwart, plenty of light if they wake during the dark.

Should I be concerned, they are all spread apart neatly and sleeping peacefully with ocassional muttering chirp.

Thanks for any help and or guidance.

I've never used ceramic heaters but I would suggest using some type of visible light for daytime...just to make sure they are getting up enough to eat

Ceramic heater has ran thru my mind as well. I was worried about blowing air on chicks. As in killing them with a draft. A ceramic heater would make out side brooding alot easier deal thou... Kinda like a mini forced air furnace!!! I'll be watching this thread, please keep us up dated. Bill

Their Behavior Sounds Ideal... Everyone's Evenly Spaced Out And Napping Peacefully... Like Shelley Said, Just Make Sure Their Getting Enough Light To Get Up During The Day And Eat.

Well, here is my poop in the punch bowl.

IR heat can not be measured by most thermometers. That's why I don't use it. The ceramic heating thing sounds way to expensive for me, but if the chicks do fine...All for it!

I'm with JJ...if they are doing fine, then go with it, but they do need to see to eat, so some kind of light will be needed.

5 min. sleep, eat, drink, play, poop cycle....I thought that was normal.

That's good advice!
I'm going to sink $500 into incandescent light bulbs, because the compact florescent, and LED bulbs just don't throw off the heat.

Good call Alex!

I think that most have already begun to quit making them, I have very bad luck with light bulbs I've purchased lately. If I'm lucky, they'll last a week...every once in a while I'll get one that lasts a month...usually, they last a few days. I think I'm going to invest in some 100W heat bulbs since I normally use 100W bulbs for my little babies anyway. Eventually my brooders will all be outside so I'll need actual heat lights anyway.

I use ceramic heat bulbs, too, and the chicks aren't blinded nor overstimulated. Further, they don't associate light with heat and have a better curiosity about their surroundings. I find it preferable, personally. They have a proper natural cycle associated with night and day, to boot!
