I've had some get stuck in strange places too. My baby chicks that a broody hatch often like to climb up under her feathers and especially under her wings. Maybe crawling into places is a natural reaction?
I've never used a heating pad, I always use heat lamps. A lady that has used both did a comparison a few years back. The only thing I remember from that comparison was that for larger numbers heat lamps were better. Both had other pro's and con's but I can't remember them but I think the heating pad used less electricity.
