I recommend using peat moss instead of wood chips. The peat moss costs more, but it lasts longer, stays cleaner because it is much more absorbent, and if the poults eat some of it then they are fine whereas if they eat woodchips it can be tough on their system. With the peat moss you can turn it about a few times before you need to change it. Giving grit from day 1 also seems to be beneficial.

I know it grows in the ground but we have no peat moss. 🤷🏾 Where do you source yours, please?

I used the pet play pen like oak abode but after a week or so it was a bit of a nightmare with them splashing the icky stuff through the mesh. The splash zone is 10ft deep 🤣

I should say for chickens it's absolutely brilliant!

That'll be just fine then, it's only a few days and you've lined it really well with puppy pads.

I'm not sure if I said we used wood pellets like for cat litter that absorbed the water really well and we scooped this out and put it on the compost heap. I used some for some seeds to start in and within 24hours I have pretty big seedlings!

We also used large wood chips and hemp bedding when we ran out of the wood pellets. I wasn't a fan of either. The large wood chips are great with chicks but I didn't like them for the ducklings they just became floppy wet mess in seconds.

haha it does indeed grow in the ground. You should be able to get it at any garden center/garden supply section. Such as the garden section at Home Depot or Menards.
Okay, cool. Clearly HD, etc. have not been my stomping grounds. Guess that's about to change (even though those places are over an hour away).
