My new chicks should be arriving August 1st or 2nd, so I am in the process of building a new brooder as our standard cardboard box wont work with our new dog. I am wanting to build the hutch pictured below but I am concerned it wont be large enough for very long. I liked this design as I thought I could use it to store the extra chicken gear when it isn't in use. My plans are to build it so the floor space is 24"x48" and I have 7standard chicks and 4 banties ordered.
Our coop is empty now and the weather will be at least in the 70's at night through the end of August but likely through September as well, so they could go outside sooner than in the spring. What do you think? Would the brooder be large enough for 4-6 weeks? I don't really want to make it bigger as I don't have the space. Should I choose a new design? Or maybe add a loft space or roosts to free up floor space?

Sorry just noticed I forgot to include the pic of the proposed brooder, silly me! The plan is from Ana-white.com. I am just changing the dimensions to make it a little larger

You might be able to do so, with the mix you have on order and with the temps being in your favor for getting them outside after four weeks. If you have power in your coop I would do it… If not the birds will be fully feathered by cold temps anyway.

A very nice looking brooder for sure, I enjoy a touch of class with our birds, that cabinet is just beautiful. If they get crowded, you can just clean it as needed, to keep problems at bay It sounds as if you have a very good working understanding of what is needed, and when, so with that in your favor, It is way too cute to not try.

Best to you and your new birds,

RJ
