Brooder construction timber treatment

Just completed the construction of my first brooder. Does anyone suggest treating the inside of the brooder incase the chicks spill some water etc? Would linseed oil be a reasonable treatment or to toxic?

Linseed oil takes forever and a day to dry. I'd go with a spar varnish. Not a real boat spar that's uber pricey but Minwax makes a version of spar/ outdoor polly. It will dry hard and water proof the interior, makes for slick surface to clean easy.
