Brooder - flooring

Hi,

I'm expecting a batch of little chicks early Dec. So I'm starting to build a brooder for them. Can I use mesh for flooring?

Wire mesh? Like window screen type stuff?
My big brooder has hardware cloth as a "floor" and I pile it deep with shavings so it doesn't hurt their little feet.

Baby chicks don't make near as much mess as ducklings-not even close.
