Brooder Ideas

I went for cheap with my brooder. Watermelon bin free from the grocery store, cut a trap door for side access, used extra garden plastic netting fastened on top with clothespins/binder clips, and a dollar store shower curtain liner underneath to protect the floor. (They graduates to shavings after about a week, but I used paper towels the first few days).

Hey y’all, thought i would update you. Me and my boyfriend ended up building a small one that is big enough for the chicks but small enough to fit comfortably in the coop/run. It’s a see no touch so our og hens can get comfortable with the newbies ;)

My husband built this one that I used when they were 4+ weeks. I’d take them from the playpen and place them in this one outside when it was warm and sunny. Covered partially with tarp for shade.

Hey y’all, Im planning on getting 2 new baby chicks in the near future. I need brooder ideas, so if you have a brooder please post a picture to help me out!
This is a brooder I just built for a friend raising fowl. The walls are Polycarbonate and the bottom is an old exterior metal covered door. The turkeys were put in to show scale.

So this idea is not going to work for all situations but it worked well for me.

I used an old 275 gallon oil tank, cut it in half (actually cut down to 24 in tall walls) and got two brooders from one tank. Sometimes you can get these tanks for free. We did burn them clean with cardboard before using for birds.

They do need to be used under a roof so they do not collect any water.

We used 5 for 100 meat birds and one separately for egg laying hatchies.

As a bonus I was able to use the middle cuts from the tanks, just rings really, as potato planters!

A dog crate with some plastic or cardboard attached to the lower section of the sides works well fit us. The plastic floor liner that comes with a metal dog crate is helpful with clean up. We put bedding over it, clean up the bedding and then remove the plastic line and hose it off, replace and throw in some new bedding. It's easy!
