Brooder Lamp - question :)

I'm just wondering if anyone knows if you could sit a brooder lamp with a shade directly on the wire top of a brooder? I dont want to cut a hole in the wire, and the heat lamp is 60W - would that make the wire get too hot? On second thoughts - i might just cut the wire - better to be safe than sorry. But if anyone has any thoughts on this please share. Does anyone else have their brooding lamp sitting on or touching anything?

If you suspend your brooder lamp above the cage, you could still achieve the needed temperature. Depending on ambient air temperatures, I have a 90, a 150, and a 250watt bulb. Different watt bulbs put out different temps, even though positioned above the brooder at 24", lets say. At 28" above the brooder, you'd likely have to use a higher wattage bulb. No need to contact the wire. No need to cut the wire either.

I brood in the cold, very cold 8-10 celsius temps (20-30F). I use a multi-lamp bar, turning on 1,2 or 3 lamps, in whatever combination of wattage, as needed.

I set my brooder lamp directly on top of my wire cage. Never have had any problems.

Your fixture has the wire guards on the front, right? If so, then it's fine. I put mine on that way and used a small quick link to attach the guard wires (where they cross in the middle) to the hardware cloth. That way, when I raised the hinged lid, the fixture held on. The wire got warm but not all that hot and the chickens weren't in contact with it anyway.
