my issue with the heating pad is its too much cost for someone who only wants a couple ducklings, When a heatlamp is 10$ at petsmart

The plates are expensive, but they are safe and less expensive to run.

Heating pads are $14 at Walmart. You will save that extra $4 in electricity in less than a week.

Yeah, but can you wash a heat lamp and use it on your own aches and pains after the babies are done with it?

Yes, I made mine based on @WannaBeHillBilly's duckling article. I got my shelf in a pack of several for $16 at Walmart, but they can be had much cheaper. Dollar General had little wire baskets for $2.50 that could be easily modified with wire cutters when I was in there last night.

I havent thought about a heat plate/pad of any kind because I’ll be using a large Rubbermaid tote to start with.
Also, as I was looking at the run they will eventually be put in, I’d like to add river rock around their pond. I know ducks do eat some small pebbles but medium river rock should be fine, correct. I’m looking for drainage.
