i see a lot of home-made brooders are using heat lamps and i was just wondering what the proper wattage is?

I used a 100 w bulb inside a terra cotta plant pot and saucer. Not fancy - but it needed to be small for my 6 chicks!

I have 10 chicks in a cardboard box with a heat lamp. The wattage is 250 I think.. But it's pretty high above the box.

We have converted some large oval rubber livestock watering tubs to brooders and we hang a 250 watt heat lamp over them once the chicks transfer to the brooder from the incubator. We gradually raise the lamps as they get older until they no longer need them. Usually at about 2-3 weeks I will change out the 250 watt heat lamp bulb to a 150 watt bulb as they get feathers and adjust to the temp and no longer need it to be so warm.
Hope this helps!
