Brooder size

We use large rubber maid totes when they are tiny. Rather than white or red bulb we use ceramic bulbs or heating pad. We have a 4’ x 5’ wood and wire brooder with wire bottom brooder outside. We have a heat source and hay for bedding. Once no longer using heat and depending on the weather we move outside. More chicks, more body heat, more mess, more cleaning. More space, less frequent cleaning.

20 chicks are going to have to be moved outside in 3 to 4 weeks anyway. I also use a large cardboard box from the hardware or work. Is your coop ready?
Just curious, what kinds of chickens are you getting?
Have you chickens now or experience with them in the past?
Coop is almost ready. We had 6 chickens a few years ago and really miss them. Sapphire Gems are what we are getting this time.

Galvanized stock tank expensive, osb cheap. 4' long x 5' wide is 20 square feet.

How have you been here for 7 years and this is your first message?
Yes we only had a few and used this site for very helpful information. A Tornado 3 years ago killed our chickens and we were devastated. But we miss having our backyard friends. Rebuilt the coop better and stronger and in a new place and order 20 chicks from a hatchery. More chicken need more information.

We have 2 sparkling gems. Beautiful ladies, good layers, kinda of moody. They even fight with each other! But it's just wonderful to watch them. They're so gorgeous 😍!
P.S. I have followed this website for a decade and just signed up yesterday.

It feels like every week they need just a little more space. We have ours in a Rubbermaid Xmas tree box right now.
