OK I have been setting up what is going to be the brooder for my ducklings when they hatch. I'm following Storeys book and reading posts in here til I'm cross eyed. I know the temp is supposed to be 95 for the first day (this may sound real stupid) is that the temp directly under the bulb or off to the sides a bit? What is the best light/heat to use. I'm having a heck of a time with regulating the temp.

I went to TSC and bought a five dollar thermometer. It says to place at the level where chicks are. Just give them enough room to get out from under the light if they choose. I use a red brooder heat lamp. I have used this for both ducks and chicks. It is 95 for the first week reduced by 5 degrees every week. In my experiences it doesnt have to be that exact. The babies will tell you if they are not comfortable. Hope that answers your questions.

It's the temp pretty much right under the lamp. If the chicks are hot they'll be on the outside edges, and if too cold they'll be huddled under it...and you can adjust the lamp up or down depending on that. I have a brooder lamp and use the red bulb in it. If you need more info let me know. :)
