BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

That's a great box! How handy it was left for you. Our first house was off Grand Traverse between Atherton and Hemphill. Small world!

Boy am I off today. I didn't mean to put Bristol Rd. I meant Hemphill as well. Between Grand Travese and Fenton, and Hemphill and Aterton. Guess I need to start rereading what I write. Lived on Alvord Ave about 2 blocks East from Grand Travese. Corner of Camden and Alvord.

I can't wait to get the new little chicks next Wednesday and raise another set of chicks. Next project since hubby said he would help is to make a bator and hatch some eggs.

What kind of rabbit do you have??

First off, WHEW, I finished. It feels like I ran a marathon over the last week or so, reading through all 142 pages of this very informative thread. It became a challenge, rather than a necessity, as I figured out what I was going to do within the first 50 pages.

I am planning to get 4 day-old hens for the first time in late March and brood them in a Rubbermaid 18-gallon tote for the first 3 weeks in a spare bathroom, away from our two cats. When they outgrow that, I hope to get a watermellon box from our local Costco and place it on a tarp in the unheated playroom in the garage. My hope is by mid-April it will be warm enough in there that the heat lamp is sufficient. They may even have enough feathers to go outside occasionally. I'm confident that a wattermellon box will be big enough to keep them to 8 weeks, when they hopefully can go into their new coop, once it's built.

This thread has been very helpful and all the folks here are not only creative but helpful as well. I think I will like it here.

Thank you all for all you've done to educate new chicken raisers...

Here is my brooder I used last April when I bought 6 RIR's and 6 Buff O's. My 15 year old Chesapeake would sit and look at them and just tremble with...I don't know what...blood lust? She never touched a one of them, though...good girl!

When they were about 4 weeks old they went into this run, where they stayed until the middle of July (they free ranged when they got older) when I built the coop.

I turned the stock tank onto it's side (to provide shelter from wind and blowing rain) and put some shavings in it for them to sleep in at night. They loved it.

My brooder is in my basement and is the top and bottom of a large dog crate joined together.
I was just given a new product to use for bedding from my local pet store to try out for them...it is pine shaving crumbles and so far it is awesome. Twice as absorbent as shavings and no where near as messy...and it makes the brooder look great, neat and tidy...well so far so good. They like to 'dust bath' in the new stuff and kick around the old shavings...so one side is neat and tidy and the other is a disaster...
crumble side is for sandbox, water, grit and food...

and the shavings side...is for sleeping and perching...

Seriously I am!!!

It is about 2 1/2ft high, by 3ft wide, and 30 inches deep.

Sorry for the poor quality, I took it on my phone.

That looks awesome! Nice Job!

Thanks! We were just going to leave it as a box, but i remembered we had a bunch of plexiglass in the garage. Now we can watch them from the couch instead of getting a sore neck looking over the top all the time!

It was an old wood box that was left in the house when we moved in. It was next to the fireplace and had a bunch of logs in it. Nothing beats free right?! Just had to get a bit of hardware cloth to keep the cats out of the top.

Ok, you guys I need some help! I am getting 15 standard chicks (cuckoo marans, buttercups, e.e., and sumatras) in May from McMurray. I thought I should build a brooder! My question is how big of a brooder should I need to hold them for 5-6 weeks? I have looked through almost all of this thread and I can't really find anything. I was thinking a 3x4x2 would work, right? Pics, Advice, Ideas are welcome.

Thank you!
