We started out with a barrel cut in half. This worked good until the chicks started jumping over each other and became a flight risk

On to plan "B"

This is the 2nd brooder box which is a 45 gallon tub from walmart. I think they are going to outgrow this one pretty quick and am trying to come up with a plan "C"

Everything has been a learning experience with the chicks

I used a very large cardboard box and put those shelving units around the lower half of the bottom with zip ties and then some hardware cloth around the upper half with zip ties. Then I put a couple of those heavy shelves over the top with heavy items to weigh it down. I was worried about rats as I see them frequently in my garage and those things will hurt themselves to get to food, so that's why it's like Fort Knox. I have a heat lamp attached to the overhead rafters in the garage with a chain so I could easily move the lamp up and down.
Then I put some stumps and branches in there for them to play on.

Boy, I really miss having little chicks.

I have a wire dog crate sitting in a box my garden cart came in. It keeps the little ones from getting out through the wires. Have a heat lamp on top and use shavings. This works for about 3 weeks with full-size breeds, hope it lasts longer for the bantam cochins in there now. My 29 gal. aquarium works as a pre-brooder for ones just out of the incubator. I can keep a close eye on them.

That is a good idea on mixing the chicks, I hadn't thought of that. I also have to use two rubbermaid tubs and I'm still worried how long they will be able to stay in them as they seem to grow fast. This is my first time for all this and I've been reading and reading everything I can.
