BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

Looks like you are starting off with a good size space. Post pictures of the babies when you get them. I called in to work one day this week so I could be home with them. They are growing fast and getting little feathers already.

I love it when they do their little take offs and fly around the box or room when I take them out.

Hi Heres what I found on the forum

From hatch to about two weeks one-half square foot per bird.
From two weeks to a month about one square foot.
One month to two months about two square feet.

You should see the mess they made of the dirt clod. It doesn't even exist any more. They ate the raspberries too. Tomorrow I am going to give them a lily flower to check out and make the little ones a roost out of limbs. Will see what they can do.

OK I need help with brooder size.... You take the width x length= the sq ft...?? Then divide the number of chicks?? And that equals the amount of space each chick will have??? So... If I build a 4'x4'=16sqft ÷ 19 = 0.8 ??? I think my brain just died... Help

You are on the right track 4x4 is 16 . So 32 chicks the first 2 weeks, then after that it could hold 16 chicks and then that space goes down to 8 chicks after they are a month old. for 2 ft divide the 16 by 2. I think , I'm no math expert. Or I would be an accountant and rich.LOL

My brooder is an under-the-bed storage container with a smaller container inset to keep their bedding from flooding everytime they decide to splash it up!
I placed it inside a dog crate to keep them safe from my curious cat & built 'bumpers' out of cardboard covered in contact paper to make them more water resistant (plus the camouflage design is much more stylish than the plain old brown cardboard! )
They are quickly outgrowing their brooder at only 3 weeks old- plus I'm kind of a neat freak so I'm cleaning it out constantly- like 5-6 times a day! At least it gives my duckies plenty of 'play time' running around the kitchen (I love the pitter patter of duck feet across the tile floor!)

I think the next step will be a fenced in kiddie pool out in the garage, I can't believe how fast they are growing!

Built them for $35 each from hardware cloth and .75 inch 'square' pipes. 2 inch PVC pipe feeder and waterer. Added a water proof tarpaulin roof with foldable sides that cover the brooders in bad weather (not shown in these pics). Roost is in, not being utilised yet.
