Here is my brooder...it will be a Serama house for the winter which will stay in the house. Front is plexiglass. It is about 3 foot by 4 foot.

It also has a screened cover.

We started out in totes, but they soon out grew them. We moved them to teh basement and laid down a tarp, we made frames by ripping a 2x4 lengthwise and nailing 8x2' frames. We stapled chicken wire to these frames. We then wire tied each pane together to make a 8x8' cage, we put another frame down the center to seperate it for teh ducks and chickens. We made frame lids for over the chickens side.

We currently have moved this cage outside to the grass and replace the center divider frame with just a 2x4 across the top. We nailed down pieces of plywood over 1/2 the top and covered it and 2 sides with a tarp for protection. We used the same lid frames for the other half. They are enjoying being outside and they have more room to run around in until we can get the coop finished.

Here is the melon box brooder.

I stapled screening material over the air holes in each corner. I put cardboard under the bedding. BIG MISTAKE. Apparantly three week old chicks like playing in the waterer!
DH and I revised it by putting a piece of plywood covered with heavy duty plastic UNDER the cardboard then lined the cardboard with the same plastic, covering all this up with pine bedding. Waterer is now placed on an unused piece of computer accessory thing that used to raise the monitor up several inches off the desk.

For their first 8-10 days they resided in a huge long rubbermaid container.

Through the years I've used anything I could get my hands on. Fridge boxes, sheets of cardboard. Once we used a pick-up topper. I've finally made one we can reuse. I cut a Sheet of plywood in half, and used that for the sides. Cut another one in quarters and used 2 quarters of a sheet for the ends. Somewhere we'd picked up a long pole, so I made brackets for the pole so it sits above the brooder. I hang the lights from that. Over all of it, we've got a huge piece of shade clothe. Keeps the peeps in, and the critters out. It's all set up in the shed, so we can close the doors at night. We're on our second batch of birds this year, and it's working great. The best part is that I've got it hinged and hooked together so it all will fold up. I think this ones a keeper!

I bought an amazing brooder off an old cochin breeder at a show. It was a cardboard box covered with styrofoam (like a hoovabator). Half the top was covered with a removable wire cover (just a bent peice of stiff rabbit fence), and the other half was a peice of wood with a light fixture in it. A 40 watt bulb was more than enough to keep chicks right from the incubator cozy. The covered section with the lightbulb stayed very warm, the open roof half was plenty of ventilation because the lightbulb was only 40 watt. Of course, I will need a larger one with sides more durable than cardboard...

I'm finally able to post a reply to this thread! I'll be picking up my chicks in 3 hours, so I got the brooder finished JUST IN TIME. First picture is with the red light off, and second is with it on... My photos are Dial-up friendly

for us country folk who aren't lucky enough to have high-speed.

The brooder is 4x4x2 with one long thin window at the front, and a lid/roof thats on hinges with a 2x2 window in it, my light is on a chain hanging from the ceiling, so I can adjust it higher and higher away from the brooder as the chicks need it less and less, it will sit outside the brooder above the 2x2 window. Also, my brooder is on wheels so I can move it around, clean, etc. The floor is lined with peel and stick tiles, I made sure to pick ones from Home Depot that were textured, and not shiney, but also cheap! My bedding is Peat Moss, with paper towels over top and then my fantasticly fun coloured feeders I got from our Co-op, my KENDAL friend should know which I'm speaking of... They even have LIME GREEN ones now!

Picture looks like you would of converted a Glass display cabinet into a brooder .... NOW thats an idea . We have several display cabinets with built in lights .and they DO GET HOT Hmmmmmm " BRAIN STORM " LOL

well here is mine

we 1st started with a pet carrier that lasted almost 2weeks

this is Day 1

Day 10 already sitting on top of the water & feed jars.

just a couple of days ago moved into the duck carrier DH made last year

A bit more room for their fluttering around.. Nothing fancy... Put the carrier on top of the opened box DH's new computer chair came in.. to keep the mess a bit more contained... if that's possible.


Oh ALmost forgot this model comes with a security system

Karanleaf, Your setup looks fine, but I am a little worried about your security system.

No need she had a bug on her nose...

She keeps a watch over the babies if they raise a ruckus she is right there to see what is up. then she will go on about her buisness.

I thought it made good for the photo though..

Tally has never offered to chase chicken or duck.. she's a good girl

She does love to chase cats though
