BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

Pics
A friend of mine came over and built this for me. It's kind of big, but the babies have lots of room to run and play. The wooden "thing" in there is left over pieces that were screwed together for the chicks to climb on.

These are some fantastic looking brooders so many different styles. I'll be building my new one tomorrow thanks to some great ideas from this thread. I'll take some pictures and add them when I can.

If not for all the awesome ideas, the main reason I follow this thread is because of all the really cute chicks in the pictures!!!
Let's keep um' up!

Heres my brooder. A large plastic container with snap lock lid from Walmart. I cut out the top of the lid, drilled holes around the edge, and attached the wire with zip ties. I keep it in the house and found that using disposable doggie training pads was much easier to change than litter and helped to keep the smell down. I will keep them in this brooder til they are big enough to move to the much larger outside brooder.

Without the lid and with clean pads.

lilchik...my brooder will be similar to yours. I will be starting out with 10 chicks in it. Do your chicks have a tendency to pile up ontop of each other in the corners?

Only when I had the heat lamp adjusted wrong. If it is too hot they will gather on the side furtherest from the light. If it is too cold they will all gather directly under the light. I have read that if the pile up, they are too cold. Now that I have a "little" experience with the brooder, all the chicks are scattered about making sweet little peeping sounds.

Okay this is not the best picture but this is the BEST brooder we have had yet! It is a former popcorn machine! Something was wrong with the popping part but the light still works perfectly! We built a floor about 6 inches from the bottom. It has partial covered floor which we cover with litter and partial wire floor where we feed/water. we place collection trays under the wire part to catch wasted feed / manure. It is completely self-contained. We keep it in the barn, but because it is completely enclosed there is not threat of predators. The is also a door at the bottom that can be opened for ventilation;). Clean up is great as I just hose it out with disinfectant and let it set out in the sun. If you happen across and old popcorn machine I recommend grabbing it!
