BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

I just finished building my brooder from plans I found in Mother Earth News, can't wait to try it out. I used salvaged wood from an old barn and other scrounged material. Never posted pictures before so I'm not sure I have them uploaded. They're not showing on the preview.

Our brooder thanks to this thread. Not alot of pictures. But it is 6 ft x 3 ft with an wire front and wire floors that we can pull the drawer out and clean. Note the two handles we have two draws to catch what filters through the fine wire. The heat lamps will hang on dall rods. The lid is to keep the cats out. We are anxiously awaiting the first hatch in a week. We built it in a day and put it down in the basement of the house so the outside temps would be stable an til we can move them outside to the coop when the weather breaks.

Finally broke down and rigged the feeder to hang also. Figured it would keep them from kicking as much bedding into the food and that it would keep them from kicking as much food into the bedding. Also cut the top off so that I could actually fill the resevoir. It bugged me that I could fill the glass quart jar but when I attached the base and turned the feeder over, the base filled and left the jar half full. This way I can have a full base and a full resevoir. Can't wait till my waterer nipples get here so I can more easily keep the water filled and fresh.



*sigh* The cone I added to the feeder previously was working very well at keeping this one fool bird from perching on top of the jar. When I modded and switched to the hanging feeder, I thought I could leave the cone off as they had not tried to perch on the hanging waterer. Wroooonnngggg! That one fool bird is back at it trying to perch on top of the new feeder. Unfortunately for her, her food, wing, eye coordination is not sufficient to allow her to get up on a moving target. She seems to have given up after about five minutes of earnest trying. We'll see if it lasts.

Can't wait till the 13th so they can go outside.

Brought the girls to the brooder in the coop last night. No more stinky chicks in the living room. They all are happy and having a good time this morning.

We are planning on building another and probably stacking for now. Its 3 x 4 x 2. I have it split in half with wire - two 5 week old Silkies on the left and 17 week old chicks on the right. We have duckies due next weekend so need another!

I have 12 girls in a stock tank. The basement is 50 degrees but their EcoGlow 20 kept them plenty toasty and now they just pile up next to it to sleep. I totally recommend it as I can turn the light off at night and they are used to the total darkness. The hanging white 2 gallon bucket is their waterer with poultry nipples drilled into the bottom and they are on a deep litter of aspen shavings. A mish-mashed brooder lid of an old screen and chicken wire keeps them from flying out, which they love to try to do since 2 1/2 weeks! So much fun.
