I wanted to show you some updates we made. We put in a 8 foot roosting bar. We also added a thermometer. And then we upgraded to more and larger food, water, and grit feeders. I have 2 kinds of feed in there. 1 organic homemade mix I blend and another organic feed store bag. The coop is 8 foot by 2.5 feet. Currently have 24 chicks in there. I have the other 10 separated due to age/size. So here are the before photos I have posted on this thread. Then the left side of the brooder and the right side of the brooder.

Looks good, Arial. You mentioned organic homemade mix. Care to share the recipe?

Looks real nice carmstrong. How do you like you EcoGlow? Is that a 20 or 50. It looks big. I have a 20 and my chicks seem to really like it.

2 parts corn (thinking about removing this thou)

1 part oat groats
1 part sunflower seeds (in winter this is increased to 2 parts)
1 part millet
1 part kamut
1 part split peas
1 part lentils
1 part quinoa
1 part sesame seeds
1/2 part flax seeds
1/2 part kelp granules
free choice of granite grit
free choice of oyster shell[/FONT]​

Love the EcoGlow(it is a 20), cheap to run and I personally believe that the chicks prefer it although an infra red light is great the chicks love snuggling up against the warm plate

(also I don't need to worry about the possibility of a fire).

Looking for advice... I am a newbie at chicken raising and was debating on whether to search for different chick breeds that i want sold in Massachusetts (may be hard cuz I want 4-5 different breeds..and sexed would make my life much easier) and buy them now and put them outside in a coop in the fall... or get them from a hatchery in the fall (they have most of my breeds and won't be able to ship until Oct) and keep them inside until after the winter is over. Then move them to the coop. I'm a little nervouse about them being outside in the winter until I'm confident in what I'm doing. How long do chicks stay in a brooder, anyway? Any advice?

So my rumpless Araucanas will be 2 weeks old tomorrow, and they've totally outgrown their brooder. I modified my German Shepherd's traveling crate for them (just by wrapping it with some plastic 1" mesh I got at Walmart--it was in the garden section for wrapping tomato plants) and moved them in tonight, and they're loving it! Soooooo much more room. They're flapping around all over the place, trying to fly--too cute!

Simi says, "Why are these things in my old bedroom???"

Thanks for this. We were planning on doing something like this but I wasn't sure how to make it work. Our dog was in a crate inside, but he's able to be out of it now, so it's just sitting in the backyard. Did you take out the pan (black bottom liner) and then just put paper over it? We'll be having ours in the garage (without the cars in there). I was worried about the feel of the wires on their feet. Were they able to squeeze between the wires? Is that why you wrapped it?
