BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

Bearded dragons don't have wings. I think a lot of people look at the tiny chicks in the bins not realizing that in a week, they'll be bouncing around like popcorn and not long after that, flying up onto whatever they think they might be able to reach and utterly without grace.

Thanks for the obvious about not having wings. I'm well aware they will be they are two completely different things. However a little ingenuity and 2 min of securing things will take care of any chances of "failure".

I actually left the top off. That lasted about ten days for six and then they went to a fully enclosed bathtub (glass doors).

What were you planning to cut the lid to make? I used a razor blade to cut the lid for my mealworm bin....and taped a cut window screen to the opening...

I'm about to cut into a plastic tote lid to make my brooder. What did ya'll use to cut the plastic? Thanks! :)
Welcome to BYC @boch boch !

Before you ruin the tote lid, make darn sure tote is really big enough to keep chicks in.
Most are really too small and even the larger ones won't hold them for long as they grow so fast.

Cutting plastic like that I'd use a fine toothed jigsaw blade or a rotozip bit in the dremel,
both would need hole drilled to start.
If you don't have those tools, a utility knife/boxcutter with a fresh blade.

Mine are less than a full week old and this morning they are really testing out those wings! I do worry about the heat lamp and will likely switch to the MHP.

I'd like a lid to keep my dog out of the brooder. He's always been VERY interested in the little easter chicks (fake) that peep. He will gently but firmly hold it in his mouth forever. I don't want that to happen with a real chick. :)

I'm going to try the MHP too tjbaker70 too. aart I don't think its big enough really but I hope to do an add on. I had a tote on hand I wasn't using so not out any money.

Thanks!!!

We too have a dog who is very interested in the chicks. She is a Min Pin. We take a chick or two out and sit with them and allow her to sit with us. She seems to be slowly getting disinterested in the chicks now. She is quite small so at some point, a few of the hens my be larger in stature than she is.

There are lots of great threads on the MHP on here. I am still trying to figure out if I would need more than one. Our utility room where the brooder is stays about 55 F and we have 26 chicks.

Post pics if you make one!

Built this one lastnight. Just need to trim the hardware cloth on the top and put the hinges on the lid. It is 2ftwx2fthx4ftL. Materials costs $35 from Menards. I also need to come up with a solution for the heat lamp. Don't plan on leaving it clipped to the lid like that but haven't had an ah ha moment on that setup yet. Still browsing this thread searching for the right setup for the heat lamp.
