We have them, and they seem to be doing ok, the last one out of the box barred rock decided i was to slow and jumped out (lucky not to have jump out on the side that would have been a big drop because they were on our table).
One black sex link and americona seem very sleepy although the sex link has perked up some but then was sleeping on her side not sure if that is ok???
The ameracana i can't get to take a sip yet all the others have, she is rather larger to to be sleepy, the sex link in smaller that is so sleepy.
ok here some pictures(orange Barred rock, purple BO, Green americana, all black sex link)

these are the two I'm most worried about

I cut 2 boxes & combined them. I taped them together with packing tape. When my 4 chicks get bigger I will let them into the whole thing. While they are small I kept them on 1 side.

For our light & heat source we used a red heat bulb. 150 watts was fine b/c it is July! At first we used quick ties to hold the lamp to the box. THen my sweet hubby ran to the pet store & bought a light holder for $7. It works great & is adjustable!
Here is a shot of both of them before we removed the one tied in.

Here is the brooder with the chicks in the whole area. They are about 2 weeks here.

We put the lamp directly on the hardware cloth for awhile. Now I am back to using the lamp stand & a screen cut from an old door over the top to keep them from flying out.

i dont have any pics, but i have a silver laced polish hen that went broody and hatched:D out 4 chicks, but i didnt make it.i read that polish hens dont go brroody. does anyone else have one that did.

Here's my brooder. It's a 20 gallon tank with a heat resistant terrarium lid. That's a heat lamp and red bulb.

I will use it for a couple of chicks at a time and also for my jumbo coturnix chicks.

We too use the extra large dog crate method of brooding chicks and it works fabulously! The chicks remain safe from our cat and dogs who think these babies would probably make a tasty snack

The chicks stay warm and draft free, and the crate is so easy to clean and sanitize between uses- just take it outside, hose it down, wipe with a diluted bleach solution, and air dry.

This is the best picture I have so far. This was my birthday present this year and it's almost done, just needs the top, heat lamp, feeder, and waterer added. My chicks will be here the week of Sept 28th. They are my first ones and I can't wait!!
