[Happy Novogens]

In the first week, I kept them in the smaller brooder seen in the back corner. It is easier to keep warm in the early days.

After a week, they went in the larger brooder I made with scrap wood. The lid is hinged both in the middle and the back.

This was cooked up by my very handy father and is made out of scrap wood and chicken wire. The floor is black plastic covered with thick layer of shavings. It has hinges hinges on the side allow it to be folded up when not in use which is very convenient! And an Australian Shepherd for flavor, lol.

I went with an expandable play pen. Fully expanded it is a little over 6x3. I have it halfway open since the girls are only 2 days old.

The brooder plate is not the one I originally ordered. The original was sent to TX and will not arrive until March 5th. It is sized for 35 chicks. The one I have now says it is for 20, but they really have to huddle to make it work and there's a bit of squabbling about it.

I added a seedling mat I have to supplement their heat and it covers about 4 extra inches on either side of the plate.

The current temperature in my garage is 65 fahrenheit. The girls do not seem uncomfortable, but I added a light sheet over the side with brooder plate to help keep it comfortable.

Please don't judge me for the horrible gimmick toy, it was an impulse buy.

This is ours. We had a terrarium we haven't used in years so I repurposed it for the chickies , I made them a heat plate from things I already had around the house (germination heat mat, hardware cloth and tubes of those shelf that pops in a plastic thing) for the frame under their water dish I used 2 dollar store picture frame and put hardware cloth in it, saves me from changing the water 30 times a day... they are little but boy are they messy lol

I really like your idea for under the water! I'll have to remember that next time.

I cannot say enough good things about "the feather brain's" recommended "camping tent brooder" - it's everything she promised in the video! They are doing so great in it, and it's really easy to maintain.

At 7 days I took away the puppy pads, expanded their area by adjusting the premier1 brooder panels I was using, and laid out 2-3" of soft shredded paper on one side and expensive hemp bedding on the other (ALL of us much prefer the paper fwiw) and now at 11 days old they are almost NEVER under the sweeter heater anymore, and much prefer bedding down into the fluffy paper in a big pile for their naps.

The ambient temp in the basement where I've got them set up is only 65-68° but they seem perfectly comfortable. I was so worried I was going to wake up to frozen chicks the first night they had their expanded space (8' x 12' tent) because they didn't seem to like the heater anymore but they are happy and active and just don't seem to care about the chill.

I'm using a pop-up puppy play pen this year and it's AWESOME! The bottom is lined with puppy wee-wee pads, with some pine shavings on top. what size is this and were did you this? Can it hold 6 -8 week old chickens? Thank you, Kimberly

I know this was posted in 2021 but maybe you can sill help me. What Size is this pop-up puppy play pen and were did you buy it from? Can it hold 8, 6 to 8 week old chickens till they are ready to be moved into their real outside home? Thank you, Kimberly Cook
