BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

Pics
This is the brooder that my husband and I built. It's in our barn. We did have our chicks in a much smaller plastic storage bin for a brooder. I have pics of that too. I also had my chicks in a even much smaller brooder when they first hatched. We kept the first 2 brooders in the house. The last one, like I said is in our barn(with our pot bellied pig named Oliver as their neighbour lol )

our first brooder :

Oliver is a sweety...loves to be loved lol. He has a wonderful personality too and loves to play with his ball. Two of my chicks are a cross between white leghorn/ silver laced Wyandotte and the other 10 are EE/ silver laced Wyandotte. They are getting so big, so fast. But I do have a broody hen that is sitting on 10 EE/ sl Wyandotte eggs, due to hatch on the 23rd and 28 of the same breeds in my bator.

I like your brooder wildsky! If you lived near me I would offer to pay you for it at this point because I am quickly running out of room and I am going to have to build a new building for all the new birds I have.

LOL - I'm thinking of converting it into a broody or nest box - already the little bantams are getting in where we cut a hole for the babies, and they're laying their eggs in there

It would be a nice safe place for a broody girl!

Sounds like a great idea to me!

here's my brooder. it didn't start out as a home for chickens. my boyfriend and i built it a couple years ago for a bearded dragon, well it just so happened my dragon passed away a few weeks before i got my chicks. i was keeping my chicks in a cardboard box and was complaining to my dad that it was a hassle and i needed something different when he suggested using the old dragon cage. IT WORKS GREAT!! it already had a UV lamp and a hole for a heat lamp. it has plexiglass doors and is easy to disinfect with its poly walls and it's big enough for the 22 chicks i just ordered. i'm also using the dragons old tree as a roost for my 4, 3week old banty chicks. thay love it!!

I finally took pictures of the brooder we built using an old tool box for the back of a pickup truck. Nothing fancy, but it was cheap and easy! My husband built the lid and hinged it so I can easily open it to clean the brooder and take care of the chicks:

We had to upgrade this morning because the girls were perching on the side of their rubbermaid brooder on the counter and one fell down to the floor! Here are pics of the their new brooder in an old play pen.

The lids from the storage boxes doubles as the dropping tray. They're on 1/2" hardware cloth. They work for ages 1 week to about 6-7 weeks for a few birds.
