I started the babies in a galvanized washtub, then moved them into this one I made. It's 2 sheets of 3/8-inch plywood cut in half. 4x4 ft. by 2 ft. high. I put the strings on top as a visual block to keep them from flying out as they got big enough. There were 15 chicks in here until they were 6 weeks old, when I moved them to the coop.

Well, I sure have enjoyed reading through this thread today.
I love all of the ideas. I'm posting a picture of my brooder but I can see that it's going to get small really fast so I am gathering some of the good ideas that I've seen on here and will be making my larger brooder this weekend.

This are my 12 chicks in a 95 qt container. I really like the fact that I can see into it. The top is cut out and replaced with hardware cloth which I attached with zip ties (I LOVE zip ties!!!

This is a pic of them inside and even though they look crowded, this only shows half of the bin. The other half of the bin is the warmer side. They like to sleep on the other side.

Hi I have six chicks and started with this.

They are now three weeks old and we moved them into this brooder which is 8x10 foot. Room is heated as well as use of heat lamp. They really like this larger brooder much better. Next move will be into their new coop and run when old enough.

This is the catalog photo of course. I bought a piece of plexi-glass/acryllic at Lowes and cut it into four 6inch pieces. I drilled small holes in it and then used zip ties to attach it to the inside of the crate so the shavings wouldn't get everywhere. It helps keep the babies in when they are little too. It was really simple to attach a clamping heat lamp and a hanging feeder to the wire crate too. Mine is the xxl one, so it is still plenty of room for my eight 3.5week old chicks.

The tray at the bottom of the crate is also removable by sliding it in and out.

Here is a picture of my set up on day one.

I had my crate before we decided to get chicks. I got it at Walmart for around $100 for our dog of course.
It has a second door on the long side, and came with a divider for the middle in case it needs to be for two dogs.
It also breaks down to about 6 inches for storage.
I am so glad I had one, but now, it will always be for chicks!

Hello Everyone,

I had actually posted all of this within the Coop and Run Design forum (as I didn't realize this one existed...Thanks arwmommy) and it was requested that I add it over here for posterity sake. So here it goes:

My sons and I just completed the new brooder house for our girls (27 of them). The old one (5' round kiddie pool) just wasn't doing the trick, especially now that the girls are getting their wing feathers and testing them out (I just don't want to chase them all over the garage when one gets out. So in order to ensure that as they get bigger they still have space and since I have trouble building anything small, we decided to build a 4' x 8' x 4' (W x L x H) Chick Condo.

The floor is constructed of Vinyl covered 5/8" OSB, the walls are 2' tall 3/4" Ply with an additional 2' of vinyl Chicken Wire (3/4" x 3/4"). The roosts are made of 1x2x4 and as you can see the girls love them!.

I also have a video which shows the old vs the new it can be found here :

that looks pretty sweet. I am also pondering what the "stage two" brooder solution will be. I think my chicks are on hgh or something, the EEs are already sprouting tail and even regular feathers on the back as of tonight. They are six days old. They have also figured that "up" will eventually lead to "out" (good thing I've got the mesh top).
anyway I think I will need brooder stage two sooner rather than later! yikes.
