BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

My 38, three-week-old OEGBs outgrew the garden trailer I was keeping them in.
I had 30" pieces left over from the 5 sheets of 1/4" plywood I used on my coop project. So I laced them together with zip ties, and made a pentagon.
It won't be long before it needs a cover. Somebody's already poopin' on top of the gallon waterer.

Check out my page for more pictures of the new brooder.

Note: The bottom of both sections is removable so that if food and water spills, you can remove the wood and clean it, and if you want to change the shavings out, you can pull the other side. The food and water portion is a hardware cloth bottom that we covered with paper towels until the chicks could walk on it.

I guess I didn't realize how fast these little chickies grow! I'm going to need to have DH read this thread and make me something bigger.

Here is what I'm currently using: (Don't mind the mess, this is my 'storage' room that is usually closed off for obvious reasons!

The lamp on the left has a ceramic heat emitter in it and on the right a no-heat full spectrum bulb. I turn that one on in the morning and off at sundown. They go to bed so well when I turn off their light.

I love this setup, but the 3 chicks I have in there are already outgrowing it! I just put them in there on the 6th!! Two of them are working on their flying and are constantly whacking the sides and the top!

I had 10 chicks in a large size dog crate last year. I had to split them into 2 dog crates after a couple of weeks. I am switching to clear plastic totes this year in an effort to keep the house cleaner. I currently have 36 eggs in the incubator and 2 totes. If even half of them hatch, I'm going to need a few more totes!

I'll post pics soon xD

We use a horse trough as our brooder

Usually we have our hens raise their chicks and normally dont buy from breeders but for the moment that horse trough is a nice temporary brooder.
