for some reason it wont let me upload pictures. but my brooder and nesting boxes are combined. lower half is 5 boxes then on top is a huge brooder that can be divided in half

just wondering if anyone else has used 75 or 100 watt red floodlight bulbs in their brooders. The heat lamp bulbs were just too hot for us....and I really do think the colored bulbs are more pleasant (green works ok too) than the harsh bright white.

I have used 75 watt black lights when I just needed a smaller amount of heat. I also use one as a little supplemental heat in my parakeet's cage ~ the light is on the outside near a perch so she can sit by it if she gets cold.

You need to get the regular incandescent light bulb like the one on the left ~ not the florescent one on the right.

You could also add a few black light poster and the chicks could have a disco party!

Yay! I finally have something to contribute to this board!

This is my first attempt at a brooder. I am using a dog house with the roof removed. I covered it with 1/4 inch hardware cloth. The door is covered with it and non-removable. The top is stapled all the way across the back and half way up the sides. I have eye hooks to secure the front. There is a small gap on each side but I don't think my cat could squeeze through there. I couldn't fit my hand through it so hopefully she can't get to it. I'm still not comfortable leaving it like that, but until I figure out a way to fix it, it will have to do.

I am supposed to pick up my first set of babies tonight, four one week old Silver Laced Wyandottes!
