We put her in the crate with her eggs and it looked like it was going to be okay. She went in and laid on them. I think she was on them all afternoon.
When we went out this evening to tuck everyone in, we let her out a minute. That was a mistake. She went in the hen house and got on some eggs that were in there. I pulled her out and put her back in the crate, but she was upset about being closed in.
I checked the eggs and some were cold (relatively, it was 55-60* today). When we moved her there were 3 more eggs, so she was up to 18. It was just too many. So I pulled 5 out and the 13 that were left looked like the right amount. We covered it up and closed them in for the night.
I would have called it a night, but then I decided to check on her. Good thing, because I found her sleeping near the gate, about 2 feet away from the eggs!!!
She was laying there just pining away for her hen house box.
So, I felt like a big meanie, but I put a "lid" on the nesting box with her in it. So now she is trapped in there with the eggs.
I hope this works out!!!!
I guess it will take some time for her to accept her new nest. I would have thought that she would want to be where the eggs were. But the place seems to call her name a little louder than the actual eggs.
I am so worried about the eggs. I keep reminding myself that this is just an experiment, but I really want it to work out!!!
Morning. My girl wouldn't come off the nest for anything this am. Left her with her food and water closer to her than usual- I hope she doesn't spill it! Maybe because we forced her off last night.
Any way candling last night- sorry I couldn't take pics. If I candle again I will have DD take photos. As it was DH was holding the broody (DC AKA dumbcluck) while I candled. Did I mention she is a bantam OEGB, and that we think these shipped eggs got VERY cold (out in snow storm for 8 hours)
So out of the 7 eggs left under her:
1 is clear
2 have nice air cells with veining (yeah)
3 have nice air cells, no visible veining
1 has a VERY large egg sac and "feels" different from the rest. Please do not have bacteria and explode under my girl.
You put shipped eggs under her. Hmm. I really want to do that. Someone told me that would be really brave with a first time broody.
I have a classroom lined up to hatch my shipped eggs, but I hate the idea of them not being here for us to get to know.
Penny, my BO, was on the eggs this morning, not that she had a choice after being locked in the next last night. I can see some eggs on her side that are not covered by her. Should I worry about them?

She is a first time broody, and yes they are shipped eggs. My mille fleur d'uccles would be my only full breed birds and those girls aren't laying yet. I did not mix my roo in with the RIR or OEGB as I didn't want mixed eggs- so shipped it was.
She has not had any trouble at all with them though. She was sitting on eggs from her and the RIRs ( unfertilized) while waiting for these. So when it was time, I just switched them out. She didn't miss a beat. And she does really seem to know what she is doing even though she is a first timer. She keeps all eggs under her, she rolls them every so often. That is weird to watch. From what I hear OEGBs are great mothers.
I am hoping the 2 eggs I have left will hatch for her. If not I am going to get have to get her some chicks. She deserves that.
I did my best at candeling and good grief that is tough .. as soon as the light hit the egg it turned speckled.. I dont think I could even see veins even if they were there?
